What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a cosmetic procedure to address breast sagging. The procedure enhances your breasts’ appearance and position on the chest wall by reducing the skin envelope and reshaping tissue. A breast lift aims to improve your breasts’ shape. It does not affect volume unless desired.

Breast lift with implants, or augmentation mastopexy, is a cosmetic procedure to reshape breast tissue and restore lost volume. While a stand-alone breast lift focuses on elevating the breasts’ position, adding implants can make flattened or elongated breasts look rounder and fuller.

During a breast lift procedure, Dr. Anderson removes excess skin and fat and then reshapes the remaining tissue into a more youthful contour. She will also reposition your breasts on your chest wall for a youthful and natural projection and address your nipple position and areola size if necessary. Breast lifts create natural-looking results by:

  • Restoring breast shape and position
  • Addressing downward-facing nipples
  • Reducing large areolas
  • Correcting breast asymmetry
  • Alleviating discomfort
  • Improving overall body proportions

Am I an Ideal Candidate for a Breast Lift or Breast Lift With Implants?

Women who have had children, breastfed, or experienced significant weight fluctuations and want to restore their breasts’ youthful appearance are typically good candidates for breast lifts.

If you are interested in a breast lift, you should:

  • Have sufficient breast volume or be comfortable with the option of breast implants
  • Be at a healthy, stable body weight with no plans of future breastfeeding
  • Be in good overall physical and mental health
  • Be a non-smoker or be willing to quit at least six weeks before and after surgery
  • Not have any medical conditions that impair healing
  • Have a positive outlook and realistic goals
  • Understand the surgical risks and benefits

Understand the surgical risks and benefits Preparing for a Breast Lift Procedure

It’s essential to be in good overall health before a breast lift procedure. Here’s general information to help you prepare.

  • Avoid weight fluctuations by sticking to a consistent exercise regimen and well-rounded diet. Eat nutritious, protein-rich meals for an optimal recovery.
  • Remain well-hydrated before and after surgery.
  • Ensure you’re medically fit for surgery by seeing your primary physician for a full examination and appropriate testing, such as a mammogram, bloodwork, or an EKG.
  • Avoid medications, supplements, or vitamins that increase bleeding or bruising risks for at least two weeks before and after surgery.
  • Arrange for assistance with household management or child care.
  • If you currently smoke, vape, or use nicotine products, you should quit. Smoking is detrimental to your recovery, so Dr. Anderson requires patients to stop smoking at least six weeks before and after surgery.
  • Prepare for recovery. Take ample time off work, purchase necessary supplies, fill pain medication prescriptions, freeze meals for easy preparation, and create a clean, comfortable place to rest.
  • Ask a trusted friend or family member to drive you home after your procedure.

Breast Lift Procedure Overview

On the day of your breast lift procedure, you’ll arrive at a fully accredited surgery center approximately an hour before your scheduled treatment. You will meet Dr. Anderson and your anesthesia provider to review your surgery details and ask any final questions you may have.

According to your procedural plan, Dr. Anderson will begin your breast lift by creating a pocket for the implant. Then, she will make the appropriate incision, as determined during your consultation, to remove excess fatty tissue and skin to tighten and reshape your breasts. Finally, she will reposition your nipples and areolas to a more natural-looking placement. Depending on the extent of your breast lift, the procedure may last for one to two hours.

Northern Virginia Breast Lift Recovery

Breast lifts are typically outpatient procedures. You can go home the same day with a responsible adult to drive you. Following your procedure, you will have bandages covering your incisions, and Dr. Anderson will fit you with a supportive surgical bra to minimize swelling and support your new breast contours. You will need to wear a bra for several weeks to ensure proper healing.

Expect swelling, bruising, tenderness, or numbness for several days following your procedure. These effects should resolve within one to two weeks. Dr. Anderson will prescribe pain medication to alleviate your discomfort throughout your recovery.

On average, patients need to take a week to 10 days off work to rest and heal. Dr. Anderson recommends getting plenty of rest and avoiding strenuous activities, such as exercise or heavy lifting, for at least three to four weeks. You can resume light exercises like walking within a week, gradually building back up to more intense workouts. During your follow-up appointments, Dr. Anderson will guide you through resuming your usual daily activities, including wearing a regular bra.

How Soon Will I See My Mclean, VA Breast Lift With/Without Implants Results?

Following a breast lift, many patients experience immediate enhancements to their overall silhouette. You should expect initial swelling and bruising to temporarily obscure your results. Residual swelling should resolve in three to four months, revealing your full results. Scarring will be most pronounced in the first few months. Dr. Anderson will recommend scar management to improve their appearance. However, scars may take a year or more to mature.

Thoroughly following all post-operative instructions and maintaining your healthy diet and exercise routine will help you experience long-lasting breast lift results.

How Much Does a Breast Lift or Breast Lift With Implants Cost?

Surgical costs vary by patient, depending on your personalized surgical plan, implant material and placement, and your anatomical needs and aesthetic goals. During your consultation, Dr. Anderson will determine the scope of your procedure and estimate your breast lift cost.  While health insurance companies do not cover elective surgeries like breast lifts, Dr. Anderson will gladly discuss your financing options during your consultation.

Breast Lift FAQs in McLean, VA

Yes. Breasts will sag after a breast lift. It is not a definitive procedure. But they will likely not sag to the same degree. So they will always be better than they would have been.

Healing for a breast lift alone is quite quick. Typically, the incisions are closed at the first post-op appointment when the dressing is removed. Additionally, healing occurs in the next 2-3 weeks.

I recommend sleeping on your back for the first few days after breast surgery if tolerated. But truthfully, it is more important to get rest than your actual position.

Yes, but pregnancy can affect your results. A revision may be recommended after your baby’s delivery.

Absolutely. A breast lift addresses the shape of the breast and restores it to a more aesthetic appearance. If you want to address volume as well, implants can be placed at the same time as the lift. The recovery is slightly longer.

The cost of your breast lift in McLean, VA depends upon various factors like the surgical technique and the type of anesthesia used. After your personalized consultation, Dr. Anderson will determine your overall costs for the surgery.

You may see immediate improvements to your breast contour after the surgery. However, significant enhancements may remain obscured by post-surgical swelling and bruising. As these side effects subside in the next few weeks, you may see the redefined shape of your breasts more clearly. The final results of your breast lift may take 4 to 6 months.

Breast lift results are long-lasting, but the natural aging process may still impact the new shape and contour of your breasts. You can prolong your results by maintaining a stable weight and following a healthy lifestyle.

While many patients experience no effects on their ability to breastfeed after a breast lift, others notice a reduced milk supply or difficulty breastfeeding. During your consultation, Dr. Anderson will discuss your plans for future pregnancies and breastfeeding to determine whether a breast lift is right for you.

Significant weight fluctuations after the surgery may affect your newly shaped breast contours. To retain your breast lift results, you should be at or near your ideal weight before a breast lift as it’s important to maintain that stable weight afterward.

You can combine a breast lift with other procedures. Some of the most common breast and body contouring procedures that are paired with a breast lift include breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and liposuction. These treatments are typically combined into a procedure called a mommy makeover that helps you redefine your overall figure.

Following a breast lift, most patients typically need 1 week off work. After this period, you can resume many daily activities; however, continue avoiding strenuous exercises for 4 to 6 weeks. It is important to remember that healing varies from patient to patient. During your follow-up appointments, Dr. Anderson will assess your recovery and recommend how soon you can resume all activities, including work.

For the first day after your breast lift, you need to rest at home and refrain from any activities except for walking to prevent blood clots. As your surgical pain subsides, you may resume light activities within a week. Lingering swelling and bruising around the treatment area may remain for a few weeks. After the first week, you can typically resume work.

It may take 4 to 6 weeks for most swelling and bruising to dissipate, after which you can resume strenuous exercise. Residual swelling and bruising may last 4 to 6 months after your breast lift.
