Pregnancy, breastfeeding, aging, or even significant weight loss can impact your body in ways that are difficult to correct through diet and exercise.

What Is a Mommy Makeover?
“Mommy makeover” is an umbrella term for any combination of cosmetic procedures designed to target women’s aesthetic concerns. Since each patient is unique, mommy makeovers are highly versatile to address your needs and aesthetic goals. Mommy makeover benefits include:
- Reducing stubborn fat and redundant skin
- Repairing weakened or injured abdominal muscles
- Creating a firmer, flatter abdomen
- Addressing C-section scars and stretch marks
- Rejuvenating breast appearance by correcting sagging or lost volume
- Restoring sleeker and more contoured figure
Mommy makeover body contouring procedures enhance your overall shape, but do not help you shed a significant amount of weight. As such, Dr. Anderson recommends candidates should be close to their ideal, stable weight before surgery.

Preparing for a Washington DC Mommy Makeover
You must be in good overall health before your mommy makeover. Here’s general information to help you prepare.
- Avoid weight fluctuations by sticking to a consistent exercise regimen and well-rounded diet. Eat balanced, nutritious meals with plenty of protein for an optimal recovery.
- Remain well-hydrated before and after surgery.
- Ensure you’re medically fit for surgery by seeing your primary physician for a full examination and appropriate testing, such as a mammogram, bloodwork, or an EKG.
- Avoid medications, supplements, or vitamins that increase bleeding or bruising risks for at least two weeks before and after surgery.
- If you currently smoke, vape, or use nicotine products, you should quit. Smoking is detrimental to your recovery, so Dr. Anderson requires patients to stop smoking at least six weeks before and after surgery.
- Prepare for your recovery. Take at least one full week off work, purchase necessary supplies, fill pain medication prescriptions, freeze meals for easy preparation, and create a clean, comfortable place to rest.
- Ask a trusted friend or family member to drive you home after your procedure.
- Arrange for assistance with household management or child care.
Mommy Makeover Procedure Overview
On the day of your procedure, you’ll arrive at a fully accredited surgery center approximately an hour before your scheduled surgery. You will meet Dr. Anderson and your anesthesia provider to review your surgical plan and ask any final questions you may have.
During your consultation, Dr. Anderson will outline how she will proceed with your mommy makeover procedures. The order of your procedures will depend on your anatomy and unique goals.
While Dr. Anderson may recommend combining some mommy makeover procedures into a single surgery, she will perform them separately if your planned surgeries will take longer than four hours. Extensive, complex procedures require time and meticulous attention to detail for your safety and optimal results.
Northern Virginia Mommy Makeover Recovery
Mommy makeover procedures are typically outpatient surgeries, which means you can go home the same day with a responsible adult to drive you. After your mommy makeover, we’ll fit you with a compression garment or support bra to minimize swelling and support your new contours. You will need to wear these specialty items for several weeks.
Your surgical sites may feel tender, uncomfortable, or numb and may be swollen and bruised for up to three weeks. Dr. Anderson will prescribe pain medications to alleviate your discomfort. The length of your mommy makeover recovery depends on your unique surgical plan. Typically, patients should take one to two weeks off work for the initial recovery. You may also need help around the house, especially with caregiving tasks.
While Dr. Anderson believes resuming your typical routine is crucial to the healing process, she also suggests getting plenty of rest and avoiding strenuous activities, such as exercise or heavy lifting, for at least three to four weeks. You can resume light exercises like gentle walks within a week, slowly building back up to more intense workouts.

How Soon Will I See My Mommy Makeover Results?
Though some mommy makeover patients notice an immediate improvement, everyone heals at a different rate. It may take three to six months for residual swelling to subside, revealing your full aesthetic results.
Scarring will be most pronounced in the first few months. Dr. Anderson will recommend scar management to improve their appearance. However, scars may take a year or more to mature. Thoroughly following all post-operative instructions and maintaining your healthy diet and exercise routine will help you experience long-lasting results from your Northern Virginia mommy makeover.
How Much Does a Mommy Makeover Cost?
Northern Virginia mommy makeover costs will vary by patient, depending on your specific needs and goals, the included procedures, and the number of surgeries required. During your consultation, Dr. Anderson will determine the scope of your procedure and estimate your mommy makeover cost.
While insurance does not cover elective procedures like mommy makeovers, Dr. Anderson will gladly discuss available financing options during your consultation.

Mommy Makeover FAQs in Mclean, VA
A “Mommy Makeover” typically involves breast surgery combined with abdominal surgery. An example would be a breast augmentation coupled with a tummy tuck.
The recovery from the combined procedure is similar to that from a tummy tuck alone. The worst pain and discomfort are in the first week or two, but they improve thereafter.
It is ideal for you to maintain a weight you can maintain after surgery. If you are overweight, I do recommend weight loss before you have surgery. A tummy tuck is not a way to lose weight.
Depending on the combined surgical procedures, the surgery can take 4 to 6 hours.
Resuming exercise will depend on the procedures and how you are recovering. Walking is always encouraged. Resuming weight training or more rigorous exercise may not be recommended for 3-4 weeks.
It is safe to combine procedures, but I typically guide you to only do procedures that require 5-6 hours of surgical time.
You will be placed in a bra and abdominal garment immediately after surgery. Loose and comfortable clothing with elastics and a zipper closure are recommended.
Sleeping can be difficult. For the first week after surgery, we recommend sleeping on your back. Extra pillows for under your head and under your knees can be helpful.
Having your family complete before proceeding with mommy makeover surgery is ideal. You can get pregnant after surgery, but your results will likely be affected, and revisions may be recommended.
Recovering from pregnancy is a complex process. I recommend waiting at least a year or longer before proceeding with any surgery.
